The Treaty of Tordesillas was not very effective. This treaty divided the land between Portugal and Spain, and eliminated other countries from competing for the new land. But, however, as we can see now, all those lands that was once in their possession is now gone and independent countries have taken its place. Also, when other countries became protestant after the reformation, they ignored this treaty. So at the end, the Treaty of Tordesillas was now that effective.
