The climax of the narrative is  Douglass decides to fight back against coveys beatings.
Douglass has been enslaved for too long to the point that he didn't even dare to stand up for his own dignity. When Douglass decides to fight back from his master's beating, it marked the last chapter of Douglass status as a 'slave' and marked the beginning of his new identity in which he accepted himself as a free man.
