Your audience shapes your writing because it tells you how to write (formal or informal). If you were writing to a friend you would probably write informally and use abbreviations like plz and u. But if you were writing to the City Council you would be formal and not use abbreviations. That is how audience shapes your writing.

Before you begin writing you need to size up who you are directing you're writing about. you wouldn't write the same way to a possible employer as you would a small child or a friend.  the use technical words might be confusing to a younger reader or someone who is not familiar with the subjects.
