The new mexico territories were undecided on slavery and was to be decided over popular sovereignty
Answer:
The compromise of 1850 had five laws and dealt with the issue of territorial expansion and slavery. The law was passed after California requested to join the Union as a free state and upset the balance between free and slave states in the Senate. So a series of resolutions were passed by senator Henry Clay to get a compromise for averting a crisis between North and South. By the compromise Fugitive Slave Act was amended and the slave trade in the capital of US was abolished, California entered the union as a free state, and the territorial government was created in Utah. This act also resolved the boundary dispute between New Mexico and Texas. But the slavery issue in New Mexico remained undecided. The compromise of 1850 also banned slavery in New Mexico , but it was openly practiced until the Peronage Act of 1867 was passed.
