Net neutrality keeps providers of internet service from giving prioritized internet traffic to certain websites while reducing the speed of service for others. The Federal Communication Commission oversees the laws that address net neutrality, even though President Obama proposed to remove that authority from the FCC and turn it over to the Federal Trade Commission. Having this neutrality protects small companies and individuals from being forced to pay high internet usage costs or else be forced to use the “slow lanes” of the internet while big companies and corporations who can afford what the internet service providers are charging will dominate the web and effectively drown out all of their competitors.
