Firstly we should discuss what mannerism is. By definition its a style developed within the confines of Europe during the Italian Renaissance (around 1520-1580). Stylistically, mannerism encompasses a variety of approaches influenced by and reacting to the harmonious ideals associated with artists such as the famed Leonardo da Vinci. Michelangelo was praised highly by contemporaries for his 'good judgement' in breaking the 'rules' of ancient architecture. Michelangelo's vestibule was considered revolutionary at the time, as it was certainly different in design than anything prior to it, and with it's odd shape and pleasing aesthetics, it foreshadows mannerism by disregarding the architectural norms of the time, while producing an aesthetically pleasing design which was revolutionary at the time.
