It was under Justinian leadership that the use of icons was restored on 843 CE. It was during his time that a lot of surviving paintings in wooden panels were made. Most of these paintings today are found in the Monastery of Saint Catherine in Mount Sinai and through encaustic technique, they were executed. The encaustic technique refers to the pigment suspended in hot wax just like the paintings of early Rome and Egypt. Some of the icons found at the Monastery of Saint Catherine may have been given to them as a present in which they gladly patronized.
