the africans had to face many threats like black codes. black codes were laws passed in the south right after the civil war that severely restricted the rights of freed slaves. the black codes included: making it illegal for african americans to own or rent farms, allowing white employers to easily take advantage of african americans, allowing officials to fine or arrest unemployed african american workers, allowing officials to fine or arrest unemployed african americans, etc. the congress responded by making the 14th and 15th amendment. the 14th amendment allowed african americans to gain full citizenship and the principle of equal protection and due process were intended to protect their rights. the 15th amendment allowed african american men to vote. this changed some things in the south and helped out african american people break through another glass ceiling. i hope this helps.
