The World Wide Web Consortium created the standards for all browsers. One of these (and arguably the most important) is the use of hypertext markup language (HTML) as the main template and language for viewing web pages. By going to a standard, it allowed (and allows) all browsers currently operating to be able to read and edit (with proper permissions) webpages without having to download additional extensions to translate the code.
