In addition to being the leader of Egypt, the Pharaoh also played the role of "god". Not in the sense that he was directly sent from the heavens, but in the sense that he was considered to be a direct representative of the heavens.
Pharaoh's played the role of gods. For example, one of the most famous pharaoh's is Anubis, the "sun god".
