Johannes Gutenberg is usually cited as the inventor of the printing press. Indeed, the German goldsmith's 15th-century contribution to the technology was revolutionary — enabling the mass production of books and the rapid dissemination of knowledge throughoutEurope.

Before Johannes Gutenberginvented the printing press in 1440, books had to be copied by hand. The Priest didn't want the printing press to happen because they believed they had ultimate authority over the bible and thought they should only have to power to read and write.
