During World War II, Germany was a member of the Axis.
The Axis powers ( also known as Rome-Berlin-Tokyo Axis ), were the nations that fought in WWII against the Allies. The beginning of the Axis was the treaty signed by Germany and Italy in October 1936. The second step was a treaty between Germany and Japan. The Axis became a military alliance in 1939 under the so called 'Pact of Steel', the integration of the military aims of Germany, Italy and Japan.
At its highest time, the Axis occupied territories in large parts of Europe, North Africa and Asia.
