The LCM (least common multiple) is 24 so let's change 3/8 to 24ths
3   x 3   = 9
8   x 3     24

Now lets add 9/24 and 16/24 and we get 25/24 which is an improper fraction.
We will divide 25 by 24 and get 1 with a remainder of 1.  We put the remainder over the denominator to get our final answer of     1   1
                                                                                    24


change 3/8 to 24ths = 9/24

9/24 + 16/24 = 25/24  or 1 1/24


you change the fractions to 24ths because that is the Lowest Common Multiple of both fractions.
