Within a cell membrane, the primary type of lipid used is the phospholipid. Phospholipids form the majority of our cell membranes and are made from two primary parts. These parts are the hydrophilicphosphate head and the hydrophobic fatty acid tail.
Biological lipids are a chemically diverse group of organic compounds which are insoluble or only poorly soluble in water.
The basic structure of the plasma membrane is the lipid bilayer. The three classes of lipid molecules present in the lipid bilayer are phospholipid, glycolipids and sterol.
- Phospholipid- It is the major type of lipid that is found in the cell membrane. Phospholipids are made up of four components- an alcohol, fatty acids, phosphate, and an alcohol attached to the phosphate. For example- Glycerophospholipid
So, the major type of lipid found in cell membrane is phospholipid.
