Positive effects include the establishment of schools and the development of infrastructure, including rail lines, roads, and ports. European powers made great profits from their African colonies – they owned the mines and fields, and therefore had access to gold, diamonds, tin, rubber, cotton, coffee, tea, and fruits. For the same reasons, the effects on the African population were often negative. African peoples often did not benefit because they did not control the mines or the fields. Instead, they worked in the mines and fields as slaves or for low wages. Another negative effect was the division of the continent without regard for existing tribal boundaries. Cultural groups were split apart or forced together. Europeans also established rule by dominant minority. After independence, these cultural effects would become major problems that resulted in civil wars over territory and the right to rule.
