Mechanical weathering is the process by which rock is broken down into smaller pieces, this can occur by other rock particles carried by an agent such as water, ice, wind, and gravity. One agent of mechanical weathering could occur in the same place for example wind + gravity, as the wind picks up objects and gravity carries the object down, creating an abrasive force, or water + ice, as water freezes and the expansion process creates cracking.
