One function that is common to both carbohydrates and lipids is Providing energy.

Carbs are a quick source of energy and easily broken down. Lipids are stored energy that can be broken down when needed. Both provide energy but in different ways.

Why carbohydrates dissolve in water but lipid cannot?

Both carbohydrates and lipid  have the same Chemical composition like hydrogen, carbon and oxygen, but in Lipid the oxygen content is much reduced.

Lipids have polar head and a large non polar tail and lack of oxygen makes it hydrophobic in nature means they do not form bonds with water molecule, hence not soluble in it.

Thus, providing energy is common to both carbohydrates and lipids.
