Economic development in Brazil during and after the American Civil War affected the lives of Southern cotton farmers by the expansion of cotton production in Brazil, which, in turn, lowered the prices of the cotton crop globally, leading to indebtedness and land loss for farmers in the South. As the global economy expanded and trade became more far reaching between the continents, competitive prices and production created more trade connections.
