what does this poem mean:
I knew a simple soldier boy
Who grinned at life in empty joy,
Slept soundly through the lonesome dark,
And whistled early with the lark.
In winter trenches, cowed and glum,
With crumps and lice and lack of rum,
He put a bullet through his brain.
No one spoke of him again.
You smug-faced crowds with kindling eye
Who cheer when soldier lads march by,
Sneak home and pray you'll never know
The hell where youth and laughter go.

Respuesta :

Answer: A young solider who was sent to war killed himself.

Explanation: From what I understand this poem talks about a young man, a solider who is send off to a war. Being young he is probably still a bit innocent but as the poem goes on he loses that as he see just how horrible the world can be from things such as wars and ends up killing himself. It also talks about how young men don't seem to fully understand the terrors that comes with serving in war.
