What was one result of the spread of Buddhism?
Many sects of Buddhism have developed and the religion has been combined with others.
Buddhism is divided into two main branches: Mahayana and Theravada. These two share certain characteristics but their goals are different. Mahayana searches for enlightenment, whereas Theravada searches for individual liberation and is primarily found in Southeast Asia.
These two branches which were combined with their respective characteristics are also subdivided in:
- The Tibetan tradition found in the Himalayas, Nepal, Russia and Central Asia. Traces its roots back to the Vajrayana Buddhism.
- Chan, Nichiren, and Tiantai Buddhism found primarily in China, Japan, Vietnam and Korea. All branches from Mahayana.
