Under any circumstances of surgery with some removal of the Cranium (skull) it is considered a craniotomy or a cranioestomy.

Craniotomy is different from a cranioestomy in that a removed bone flap is immediately replaced following corrective procedures. A cranioestomy has the bone flap being replaced sometime after, and is more commonly used in correction of patient with increased and dangerous intercranial pressure.
