What do you think The Assassin was right in killing the Arch Duke? Why or why not?

Answer:

It's 101st anniversary of the assassination today.

Present day Bosnia and 1914-Bosnia do bear some similarity, and I'll use that claim to answer the question.

Today, we're still under international (EU-led) protectorate (currently represented by, accidentally, an Austrian diplomat) and there is a resistance to the European and NATO integrating processes by the Serb representatives (now that rings some 1914 bells). In such an environment, you could guess what is the view people take. Mainstream Bosniak and Croatian interpretation is the one seeing Gavrilo Princip as a terrorist, and the assassination is sometimes (half-jokingly, I hope) mentioned as one of the reasons we're not in the EU today (if only he hadn't shot Franz, today we'd be Austria). Mainstream Serbian interpretation is seeing Gavrilo as the Vidovdan hero, fighter against the oppression. I emphasize the word mainstream as, of course, everyone is entitled to her/his own opinion and hence opinion within one national group may differ.

Now, let us make a little timetravel-picnic at the place where Princip shot Franz and Sophie.

1917: Austrian authorities: Let's make a big memorial for Franz and Sophie right next to the place they were shot!

1918: Serbian army: Let's take it down!

1930: Yugoslav authorities: Let's put a plaque to celebrate Gavrilo, the hero! Let's also name the bridge nearby after him.

1941: German army: Let's take it down and take it to Berlin as a birthday present to our Führer! And change that bloody bridge's name while you're at it.
