The anatomic position that has the patient lying at an angle instead of lying flat or directly on their side is oblique. This position indicates that the body or a body part is rotated in the sense that it does not create a frontal or lateral position such as position between 0 and 90 degrees angle. Common angles are 15, 20, 30 and 45 degrees that gives a three dimensional figure or position. There are four possible positions, right posterior oblique (RPO), left posterior oblique (LPO), right anterior oblique (RAO) and left anterior oblique (LAO).
