Selenium is a component of enzymes that help regulate thyroid hormone. Metabolism, synthesis and action are regulated of both iodine and selenium. Traces of selenium is important in the body to help the recycle of iodine. Deficiency in selenium would also lead to deficiency of iodine which lead to imbalance of the hormone thyroid and would cause illnesses related to it. Other function of selenium would that it is an important component of glutathione peroxidase enzyme which protects the tissues from any oxidative damage. It also involved in the synthesis of coenzyme Q which is important in cellular electron transport.
