A hermaphrodite is an animal with both male and female reproductive organs.
This condition of having male and female genitals and gametes of both sexes is most common in invertebrates. It also happens to some fish species and other vertebrates, but it's not as usual.
The origin of the word hermaphrodite is Greek. It's the combination of the names of two Greek gods, Hermes and Aphrodite. Their son, Hermaphrodite, was so in love with a nymph that they decided to unite themselves completely, in one body, having male and female characteristics.
