A group of 202 people went on an overnight camping trip, taking 60 tents with them. Some of the tents held 2 people each, and the rest held 4 people each. Assuming all the tents were filled to capacity and every person got to sleep in a tent, exactly how many of the tents were 2-person tents?

Respuesta :

Imagine x was the number that could held 4 people then 60-x would be the number that could held 2 people so our answer would be calculated in this way:

4*x + (60-x)*2 = 202
4x + 120 - 2x = 202
4x - 2x = 202 - 120
2x = 82
x = 82/2 = 41

As we said 60 - x could held 2 people, so the answer is 60-41=19

The number of the respective tents for the people that went camping are;

Number of 2 - persons tent = 19 tents

Number of 4 - persons tent = 41 tents

  • We are giving;

Number of people for the trip = 202

Number of tents = 60

We are told that some tents held 2 people each while some held 4 people each.

Let the tents that held 2 people each be a.

Thus, number of tents that held 4 people each would be (60 - a)

Therefore;

number of people in 2 people tent = 2a

number of people in 4 people tent = 4(60 - a)

Since all the tents were filled and there were 202 people in total, then we have;

2a + 4(60 - a) = 202

2a + 240 - 4a = 202

240 - 2a = 202

2a = 240 - 202

2a = 38

a = 38/2

a = 19 tents

Since number of 4 people tent is 60 - a, then we have;

number of 4 people tent = 60 - 19 = 41
