To what extent did political parties contribute to the development of national unity in the United States between 1790 and 1840 ?

Political parties did far more to divide the nation than to unite it. Practically all of the Founding Fathers did not want a party system to emerge in the United States, because it created "teams" whose inherent desire was to beat the other side.
