A typical value of data set is value which occurs often in the data set. For the given data set, its "mode" would describe its typical value.
What is the property of mode and when to prefer it compared to mean?
Suppose that there are 10 persons, out of which 9 person are normal and 1 person is having 1 hand only. The mode of number of hands they've got is 2 (since 9 people posses 2, and thus, 2 is having maximum frequency), whereas mean is 1.9, so we have:
Mean telling that each person have 1.9 hands
Mode telling that typically, each person have got 2 hands.
This is the main difference.
We choose mode instead of mean or median when we have to choose value from the data set itself, which occurs often.
For the given data set, 20, 21, 21, 25, 20, 23, 27, 23, 24, 25, 26, 24, 23, 22, 24
we see that 23 and 24 occur mostly(3 times each) than any other number. Thus, this data set has two modes as 23, and 24(such data set which has two modes is called bimodal data set).
Thus, typical value of the data set is 23 or 24.
