There he stablished what became the bases of modern baseball. He determined the diamond-shaped infield, the foul lines and the three strike rule. He also abolished the practice of tagging runners by throwing balls at them. This made this sport modern and fast paced, making it popular.

He was elected to the Hall's of Fame third induction class in 1938.
