Bones
are covered and lined by a protective tissue called periosteum. The
inner (osteogenic) layer consists primarily of osseous tissue.
It is also called bone tissue and it is the major structural and supportive connective tissue of the body. The bone tissue mainly consists of collagen fibers. There are two types of osseous (bone) tissue: cortical bone - the hard exterior of bones and cancellous bone - the softer part of the bone.
