Sailors wanted adventure and explore the unknown. they sometimes did it for the sake of knowing is the world was round or for money :) hope this helps
The common reason explorers set out for unknown lands, according to the Encyclopedia Britannica, was the stimulation to seek new routes, rather than new lands since by the end of the 14th century the empire of the mongols was breaking up and therefore Western merchants could no longer be assured of safe conduct along the land routes.
