It was Pope Urban II of the Roman Catholic Church who orchestrated the battles during the crusades. This was in 1905 when he ordered the Christian Nations to defend Jerusalem from the Muslim invaders. It was also him who started the crusade from the request of a Byzantine King to defend his empire from the turks.
