Why does Simon suggest they go back to the mountains, in the book lord of the flies ?

In Chapter Eight, "Gift for the Darkness" after Jack splits from Ralph's tribe, Simon suggests that the remaining boys "ought to climb the mountain. [...] What else is there to do?" (128)

He thought ,"Where else is ther to go?" He couldn't make hisself believe in the existence of a winged creature that was unable to catch Samneric. To Simon, the story made no sense. The only option now was to go back to the mountain and discover what Samneric really saw.
