Panama was full of anti-American riots during 1964, the Panamanians did not agree with the US control of the canal, they believed that it was an affront to the Panamanian sovereignty. In 1977 during Carter’s administration, the US and Panama signed an agreement, there were two treaties: 1) Terminated the original Treaty and created a new one giving complete control over the canal to Panama and 2) A Treaty that gave the US a right to protect the canal’s neutrality.
Many Americans did not agree with the Treaties and said that the Americans bought it, paid for it and should keep it, they believed that America had the right to the canal.
