The costs of alternative energy sources have been too high to fully transition. For example, for wind power, the placement of wind farms can be difficult, is initially expensive, and maintenance can be expensive and blades are damaged, and even local wildlife (birds) are hurt by the wind farms. Other sources, like solar, are also prohibitively expensive too.
It would take a massive: cheapening or subsidizing of these sources in order to transition in time.
