The Nazca and the South American plate shares a convergent type of plate boundary. The Nazca plate (oceanic plate) is a part of the larger Pacific plate towards its eastern side, that collides with the South American plate (continental plate), as a result of which the Nazca plate being denser sinks below the South American plate. It creates a subduction zone that is marked by the presence of a trench above it. The magma at huge depth, is again generated from the melting of the plate and slowly rises up towards the surface of the over-riding plate forming volcanic islands. The convergent of this two plates led to the formation of Andes Mountain and deep-focus earthquakes are generated due to this type of plate boundary.
