It was important to the Spanish colonists that their slaves didn't know the terrain of the land because that way the slaves were less likely to escape.

That made sense since the Spaniard's perspective that had invested in buying the slaves to exploited them. For them, slaves were not people, they were the labor force, a product, an investment, and by no means, the Spanish were willing to lose the slaves. So in not knowing the terrain, slaves were less likely to escape, avoiding the risk of getting lost in the jungles of an unknown land.
