I believe he was put to death as a meme because he was old and overused as goes for a meme 9 years is along time of popularity. I don't think it was because of politics or the news using him. Because Politics have nothing whatsoever to do with internet memes and the news didn't use him either. He was solely for use on the world wide web for trolling loll's and gags.
