what kind of turtle do I have and does it need a water habitat? And under him 12 spaces. Please, I don't want him to die of wrong treatment.

It might be a tortoise because turtles usually have flatter shells I think. Tortoises don't need a water habitat. You could google the characteristics of it to find out for sure though. :)
