Read this excerpt from Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave:

After the valuation, then came the division. I have no language to express the high excitement and deep anxiety which were felt among us poor slaves during this time. Our fate for life was now to be decided. We had no more voice in that decision than the brutes among whom we were ranked. A single word from the white men was enough — against all our wishes, prayers, and entreaties — to sunder forever the dearest friends, dearest kindred, and strongest ties known to human beings.

Which cruel realities regarding slavery does Douglass describe?

A) Slaves were sold to cruel masters and treated like animals
B) Slaves were treated like property and separated from loved ones
C) Slaves were sold to white people who also bought their families
D)Slaves were treated cruelly but were not separated from their families

I believe the answer is either 1) A or 2) B because C and D is wrong. if the white people actually bought their families, they would not be separated as with the word "kindred, friends" etc. D is almost the exact same thing as C, they were not separated. Personally I think B is a better answer but I'm not sure. Hope this helps anyway.

Answer:

The cruel reality regarding slavery that Douglass describes is "Slaves were treated like property and separated from loved ones"

Explanation:

This excerpt from Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave by Frederick Douglass talks about the process that the slaves passed through when they became objects and they were sold as any kind of merchandise that does not feel, does not think, and does not matter, it exists just to serve to a purpose.
