2x - 3 = 10x + 1 .... subtract 2x from both sides:
-3 = 8x + 1 ........... subtract 1 from both sides:
-4 = 8x ................. divide both sides by 8
-4/8 = x ................ reduce the fraction
-1/2 = x
Or you could do:
2x - 3 = 10x + 1 .... subtract 10x from both sides:
-8x - 3 = 1 ............ add 3 to both sides
-8x = 4 ................. divide both sides by -8
x = 4/-8 ................ reduce the fraction
x = -1/2
