The Tuareg are an ethnic group within the Berbers. They live in vast regions of the Sahara dessert, which comprise territories in Southwestern Libya and the Southern areas of Niger, Algeria, Burkina Faso or Mali. They are traditionally connected to nomadic pastoralism, therefore they perform economic activities related to raising livestock. Historically, the Tuareg have significantly contributed to the spread of Islam.
Of the aspects that make Tuareqs unique is their language, called Tamasheq, related to the family of Berber languages and dialects. Secondly, the Tuaregs started a rebellion 2012 due to marginalization in terms of both economic and social aspects, which finished with the unilateral declaration of independence of a territory located in the North of the Republic of Mali, named Azawad. Such independence has not been recognized by any country in the international spheres. A year later, in 2013, that territory rejoined Mali.
