A True Poem
By Lloyd Schwartz, 1941

I’m working on a poem that’s so true,
I can’t show it to anyone.
I could never show it to anyone.
Because it says exactly what I think,
and what I think scares me.
Sometimes it pleases me.
Usually it brings misery.
And this poem says exactly what I think.
What I think of myself,
what I think of my friends,
what I think about my lover.
Exactly.
Parts of it might please them,
some of it might scare them.
Some of it might bring misery.
And I don’t want to hurt them,
I don’t want to hurt them.
I don’t want to hurt anybody.
I want everyone to love me.
Still, I keep working on it.
Why?
Why do I keep working on it?
Nobody will ever see it.
Nobody will ever see it.
I keep working on it even though I can never show it to anybody.
I keep working on it even though someone might get hurt.
Thank You :)

Explanation:

A true poem by Lloyd Schwartz Subject of the poem:

Pain and sadness Hannah Eubank

Diction Misery Hurt Nobody and Love. In two to four complete sentences, think about each word and answer the following questions about each word.

⦁ You can tell the authors tone is very down.  It reflects on what the author is going through. The words we see alot show alot of negativity and shows us the author is feeling pain and agony.

Imagery  When you have a poem thats good and you dont want anybody to see it because it may make someone else feel sad, alone or hurt. In complete sentences, think about this image and answer the following questions.

⦁ Just from reading this short poem, we see that the author does not want to hurt other people. From this, we see the author is very caring and from his tone we can tell everything he wrote can straight from the heart.

Details Hes using the word poem as a replacement for love. After saying "Im working on a true poem I can show to everybody" he states he could never show it to anybody before. In complete sentences, think about these details and answer the following questions.

By the authors low tone, he dosent want to inflict any hurt but still keeps working on his "True poem". In fact while paying attention to details, we can conclude he uses symbolism. He uses to word "poem" to symbolize love.

Syntax  If we pay attention to the word choice of this poem we would notice how he repeats certian phrases and grammatical structures to word how he is feeling. In complete sentences, think about this syntax and answer the following questions.

⦁ The way he words things represents how he would be saying it if he was right in front of us. I would hear his low tone and it would be clear he is going through pain and is tryingn to figure this misery out. The author puts a period at the end up each line to give a pause after each feeling he lets out.

Tone: The author in this poem overall has a sad but hopefull tone (i say hopefull as well because of the last 2 or 3 lines). It represents his feeling of lonliness.
