Indian mutiny was also called sepoy rebellion during the first independence war against the British rule in India in 1857-59. The rebellion began when a soldier named Mangal Pandey refused a new rifle.

The cause of the sepoy rebellion was when some angry soldiers refused to use rifles which were made by using grease which contains a mixture of pigs and cows lard that affect their religious sentiment.
The first independence war against the British was started at Meerut by the Indian soldiers it spread in Delhi, Agar, Kanpur, Lucknow, and Jhansi. It was an unsuccessful attempt against the British ruler.
Therefore Sepoy's rebellion is also called the first independence war.
