Why do atoms want to lose or gain electrons?

It's the electrons in orbit around a nucleus that allow atoms to interact with each other. Atoms can lose or gain electrons. When the atom gains the electron it becomes a negative ion. When an atom loses an electron it becomes a positive ion.
