The Spanish Dancer is a novel written by Victor Hugo
The novel tells the story of a gypsy girl who fascinated a king and was able to shake a kingdom. The Gypsy girl is called Maritana, a street performer of old Spain. But of course she was only a gypsy dancer and the Queen had the idea of studying the vivacious young person that was alluring her husband and by doing that, she might learn from her about the tricks that charmed her royal spouse. The king’s own spies reported that he himself was being spied upon. But in a turn of events, the gypsy dancing girl had fallen in love with Don Caesar de Bazan, a dissolute nobleman.
The connotative association that could reasonably be connected to the word "sulphur," in "Spanish Dancer" is:
the Christian idea of Hell
For sulphur makes a direct association to the expression "rivers of sulphur in hell"
