Turning corners in a car takes longer, and all of the cars wouldn't go as smoothly because you need to slow down some to turn a corner. Since racetracks are ovals the drivers just need to turn, which you don't really need to slow down for.
I believe a oval is better because the drivers have a straight part of the track were they can pass and get up speed, and the turns are not so sharp so it is less dangerous then a rectangle track were a driver would have to slow down even more. And a rectangle track would be harder on the turns because it is at a 90 degree angle so it would be easier to crash on the sharp turns.
