The Vicepresident of the US is the second-highest officer in the executive branch of power, after the President. He is the one who would take over the president role in case something happens to him. Both are elected together as part of the same list in the general elections.
The formal duties of the vice-president are the following:
- President of the Senate
- Preside impeachment trial against high-level federal officers
- Supervise vote counting in elections
- Sucession to the presidency in case of president's removal, death, resignation, or inability
- Sucession in case the president faces an inability situation and is declared disabled
- Representatives roles in events and foreign affairs meeting when the President cannot attend them
