Zitkala-sa feels that people with short hair are the ones who are grieving. Grieving people are those who are sad and in need of emotional assistance or help. The Native American writer said that short hair was worn by mourners.
Zitkala-sa does not like to have her hair cut short because her impression on people with short hairs are mourners. When Zitkala-sa's hair is long, she feels that she's free like her hair blown by the wind and she also feels that she is not oppressed.
