He added several pictures of symbolism in his painting, a few examples include:
1) There is a broken sword lying on the ground near the giant's hand - This symbolizes that the power of the people was useless against the force of bombs (The sword is an ancient weapon that would be ineffective against such weapons of mass destructions like bombs.)
2)There is a man trapped in what appears to be a burning building, head and arms raised screaming in pain - The people did not all die from the initial explosions of the bombs, many burned to death in the resulting fires, a far slower and more torturous death.
3)The bull standing in the corner and the horse/dog (idk which it is) in the center below the sun/eye screaming out - This shows that nothing was spared, not even the animals - The bull may have a double meaning as it was a symbol of power in Spain and of Spain itself.
4)The mother holding her dead child, head thrown back, mouth open wide, screaming and crying in agony to the sky - This is one of the most powerful symbols in the painting. It is said that there is no pain, no suffering, and no agony that can compare to that of a mother whose child has been torn from her. This image evokes a feeling of sorrow, pain, and sympathy for the people, as well as horror and disgust at the sheer inhumanity of such a strike. Mot people can practically hear the mother screaming her pain, a true symbol for what happened. This also shows that even the children, the innocent in the war were not spared.
